Calcium oxide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, releasing a large amount of heat. It is slightly soluble in water but soluble in acids. It is corrosive and irritating to the eyes, respiratory system, and skin.
Uses: Used as an analytical reagent, a reagent for spectroscopic analysis, a co-solvent for phosphors, a decolorizing agent for vegetable oils, and a carbon dioxide absorbent in gas analysis. High-purity reagents are used in the epitaxial and diffusion processes of semiconductor manufacturing.
