Phenol
Phenol is an organic compound with chemical formula C6H5OH. It is a colorless, needlelike crystal with a special odor. It is poisonous and is used as an important raw material in the production of some resins, fungicides, preservatives and medicines such as aspirin. It can also be used for disinfecting surgical instruments and excreta treatment, skin sterilization, antipruritic and otitis media. Melting point 43oC, slightly soluble in water at room temperature, easily soluble in organic solvents; When the temperature is higher than 65oC, it can be mixed with water in any proportion. Phenol is corrosive and denatures local proteins upon contact. The solution can be washed with alcohol when touched to the skin. A small amount of phenol is exposed to air and oxidized to quinone by oxygen and turns pink. This method is usually used to test phenol in the case of purple ferric ion.
