The pure product is a colorless crystal, slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in alkaline solutions such as soda ash and caustic soda. The effect of ferric chloride solution is brownish red. The acid salt has a bluish red fluorescence, which turns into a red-purple color after adding alkali.
