Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin—also known as Copper Sodium Chlorophyllin—is a highly stable metalloporphyrin. It appears as a dark green powder characterized by strong tinting strength and brilliant color. Its aqueous solution presents as a clear, transparent blue-green liquid; however, the presence of calcium ions causes a precipitate to form. When the pH of the aqueous solution drops below 6, a powdery precipitate appears at the bottom of the liquid; this occurs because the planar molecular structure of sodium copper chlorophyllin facilitates aggregation under acidic conditions. Sodium copper chlorophyllin is typically synthesized using spinach or silkworm feces as raw materials; chlorophyll is first extracted using acetone or ethanol, after which an appropriate amount of copper sulfate is added to displace the magnesium atom within the chlorophyll's porphyrin ring, thereby yielding the final product.
